I might just sell you the shirt off my back!

For that's what this Sunday's NIFTY FOR FIFTY SALE is all about.

Heritage Hall on Main St is packed to the rafters with killer deals, all $50 or less, by some of the West Coast's best indie Designers, who are also on hand sharing what they do. It's a great opportunity to have the people who make the clothes fit you properly and talk to you about your favorite pieces and great scores.
I'm quite excited, and time is at a premium right now, so I've summarized my experience thus far in a poem, just now, for you.

T'was two nights before the Nifty for Fifty
and the car was all packed
full of skirts, pants, and jackets,
new vintage printed slips, and things like that.
The tagging was done
and the snacks were all bought
the only thing missing was
YOU and some FUN!

I expect this to be studied, very closely, by highschool English Lit students 100 years from now. "Hmm", their young minds will exact, "Snacks must be a reference to the only 'food group' Designers partake of during market events" (we also like to 'eat' a lot of coffee, tea, and water but we hate bathroom breaks, oh mother nature!).  There should be a line about the fine art of packing a car as well, but maybe I'll save that for a haiku next month.

Hope to see all you fashion loving Vancouverites and Victoria friends-on-shore-leave Sunday 11am-8pm.
xoxo

So long Levon Helm, and thanks for the name!

We're paying tribute to the recently departed Levon Helm in the studio today. After all it was his lady friend Libby Titus who coined the phrase that named this fine company "Floating Gold Iceberg". Her inspired string of words was a reaction to an unreal lifestyle, but in it we found inspiration for boundless creativity. Dreamy, Shiny, Canadian Design, a little something for everyone.

The Band was on high rotation during the production of the first FGI collection, Spring 2008. So it's not surprising that the name came from that storied source as well. Here's a link to the original article that I read with a glass of red wine one night on Saltspring Island.

Naming a company can be an arduous task and there had been much deliberation to find language that fit the vision. A high end, handmade clothing company that combines artistry, beauty and comfort. A brand that provides customers with a local Canadian made product they can identify with and make their own. What a relief then that someone in the world thought to say "Floating Gold Iceberg", and someone else thought to put it in print. We can create with it, you can interpret it, a vision indeed.
I've always liked The Band. They were all very good at what they did, individually and as a whole. They were working crafts people, some crazier than others, but they were a great, understated example of creative community.
So if you haven't seen 'The Last Waltz', you might ought to think about doing that. Both my parents think it's groovy (is that a sell for any of you?) and when I saw it in the theatre there wasn't a dry eye in the house after Neil Young sang 'Helpless'- even the men folk. It was a beautiful thing.

I'll end with my own personal story of Levon Helm, and some early FGI designs that were surely inspired while listening to The Band...
A couple summers ago I met my best friend in San Fransisco for a big-little music festival called Outside Lands. It's held in Golden Gate Park every year, sponsored by local wine, beer, food and art- totally dreamy. The first act we were going to see was The Levon Helm Band. We were running late, we'd got lost in the jungle of the park on our way to the concert, winding roads and botanical gardens... I accidentally fell asleep under a palm tree at one point (California has this effect on people). But we held hands, followed our ears and as we came closer it was Levon we could hear! What a thrill to be welcomed to the city, the park, the festival by his voice! I pulled out my phone, called my Mom and just held it up for her to hear as well. It's an old concert tradition in my extended family. I once answered the phone to the sound of Axel Rose's voice, another time it was Marianne Faithful (better!).
:
So thanks Levon Helm, Libby Titus, and The Band. I'm a real grazer when it comes to inspiration, both food and design, but some sources shine brighter than others and this guy was one of those.

Spring has Sprung into FGI's online Boutique... and it's Brilliant Pink, Calmest Grey, Flirty Mauve and Soft Sweet Fawn.

We're certainly in the mood to celebrate our new line for Spring 2012, so let's begin now!

Spring is about what's flirty and fun in fashion, the return of bright colours and pairing of neutrals with flashes of bright things ahead. Think about digging out your favorite jean jacket, and those cute shoes that really only look good in bare feet (I think they're called sandals? It's been awhile).

This Spring at FGI there's an emphasis on not just colour but texture, softness and structure. Extra supple fabrics, just the right stretch, and of course the perfect accessories for your favorite outfits- to really let them shine.
We're working with blends of organic cottons and recycled poly that are softer than anything you can imagine. The leather we use for accessories like Tie Belts and the Day Tripper Tote is all re-claimed. So you can feel good AND look good!

Let's start this celebration with a small tour of what's new and an invitation to save with *Free Shipping* on your order. Hop over to our Boutique Here and enter promotion code 'FREESHIPPING' at the check out. The postage and handling is on us!

Get luxurious and relaxed, here comes the sun!

I feel like an Eton Mess.

Of course, more accurately, I feel like EATING an Eton Mess.
Today's inspiration comes from Jana at Janamade Jewelery, who for years has been trying to show me the best recipes, magazines and hair products which I have, in a lot of cases, failed to properly utilize. It took me about 4 months to make it to her house for an evening of 'The Delicious Ms. Dahl' but once again, The Delightful Ms. Jana was right, it's a 'splendid jolly good' show. Sophie Dahl is so gorgeously languid in her cooking (shhh, the cynic in me would like to see some outtakes...) that I cannot help but be inspired to make a mess of my kitchen. An Eton Mess.

wish me luck, xo
